A few things on my radar this week:
This article written by Abigail Pesta recounts the aftermath of the Northern Illinois University shooting and how life has progressed for its survivors four years after the fact. The article itself does a great job in providing a voice to individuals who were previously seen as victims. The focus of the story, a young woman named Maria Ruiz-Santana, recounts the accident, her physical and emotional recovery, and the choices she made to move past the incident. Determined and strong, Ruiz-Santana is an inspirational figure who faced death and overcame obstacles instead of letting fear cripple her. You can read the full article here.
A photo documentary created by Theron Humphrey, “Why We Rescue” highlights the stories of shelter animals that have touched the lives of their owners. Transversing all fifty states, “Why We Rescue” features audio commentary by the owners themselves and beautiful visual additions to the story. You can check out the full project here.
